Dual Diagnosis Toolbox: e-learning course

Embrace-learning is developing two online resources in the fields of mental health and substance misuse. One addresses substance misuse specifically whilst the other provides a Dual Diagnosis Toolbox, covering substance misuse by those with mental health problems. The resources are mapped to the Drugs and Alcohol National Occupational Standards (DANOS) developed by Skills for Health.

Background

The lives of people who misuse substances are at risk because of a lack of qualified practitioners in the workforce, which is struggling to meet the demands of the national Drugs Strategy. The 'Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy for England 2004' called for an increase in workers competent in meeting the needs of people who misuse alcohol and drugs.

Skills for Health developed DANOS as part of a base development strategy for those working in the field of substance misuse. Although DANOS has been integrated into hundreds of courses nationwide, problems remain in finding the funds to train large numbers of people through conventional training methods. Staff may not have the opportunity to gain relevant qualifications because they cannot spend time off-site, or they are simply unable to afford it. Current training materials are often very general and become obsolete surprisingly quickly. This where e-learning can help.

Dual Diagnosis Toolbox

This toolbox is designed for those working with people with a 'dual diagnosis' of co-existing mental health problems and drug and / or alcohol use. Practitioners often find these clients to be particularly challenging.

They often do not feel confident when working with clients presenting with a range of complex and inter-connected needs: mental health workers often feel ill-equipped to work with a patient who is actively using drink and drugs, whilst their colleagues from drug and alcohol services feel the same in relation to the assessment and treatment of a range of mental health problems.

The prevalence of dually-diagnosed clients attending drug and alcohol services is very high. Mental health workers and drug and alcohol workers need practical, clinically-focused tools to help them detect, assess and plan treatment for such clients in a consistent and systematic way.

The purpose of the Dual Diagnosis Toolbox course is to address problems arising from a general lack of training in Substance Misuse and Dual Diagnosis across the health and social care workforce. It is aimed at a very wide range of front-line staff, including:

  • Community Health workers
  • Drug and Alcohol workers
  • Crisis Resolution teams
  • Healthcare workers in prisons
  • Practice nurses in primary health care settings

...and many others

The Dual Diagnosis Toolbox consists of:

  • detection and assessment tools
  • models of care
  • treatment considerations

Learning Objectives

On completion of this course learners will

  • have increased confidence in their knowledge, skills and ability to work with dually-diagnosed clients
  • understand the issues facing dually-diagnosed clients from the clients' own perspectives.
  • have access to a range of evidence-based detection and assessment tools.
  • make a clear link between assessment strategies and interventions, for both drug and alcohol issues and mental health problems.
  • possess Increased knowledge and confidence about the overlapping boundaries of service provision, promoting more effective ways of joint-working and information-sharing between services and individual practitioners.
